Article:It is less than 100 years ago that chronic, often disabling illnesses such as diabetes, rheumatism and arthritis, multiple sclerosis, asthma, Parkinsons, Alzheimers and cancer became distinctly visible on the health landscape of the western world. In the new 21st century of today these ailments are virtually unknown amongst so-called undeveloped countries, which are not undernourished. 18 cultures, which live longest, do so because heart disease, strokes and cancer, which are responsible for most deaths in the western world, are unknown to them. Wild animals of the deep jungle are singularly free from human-type degenerative, intractable ailments. Incidence of cancer which is the second biggest killer amongst males and biggest amongst females in the United Kingdom, is directly proportional to the GNP of a nation i.e. cancer incidence matches the degree of industrialization. Medical missionaries never found cancer among the 'primitive', though they did find it among 'modernised'. Except among civilized Eskimos, no native cancers have been found in the Arctic. Fredrick L Hoffman, Chairman of committee on statistics of the American Society for Control of Cancer stated: "Cancer is unquestionably rare in native races" American farmers for the last several decades have experienced high rates of many cancers including leukaemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and brain and prostate cancers. Animal and epidemiological studies have linked several of these with exposure to pesticides or solvents. American farmers used 50 million pounds of insecticides in 1940's, 600 million by 1970s and currently use over one billion pounds of insecticides each year. Undoubtedly, toxic overload is a major contributor, if not the main cause of chronic disease. It is impossible to entirely escape exposure, either from food (over half a dozen pesticides are used to process wheat) or atmosphere. According to US Environment Protection Agency, over 2 billion, 200 million pounds of toxic chemicals were released into the environment in the United States in 1994 alone, (1987 - 1994 Toxins Release Inventory National Report, Washington, DC: office of toxic Substances); it is estimated as much as 25 percent of the United States population suffers from heavy metal poisoning (Pizzorno JE. Murray MT. Detoxification: A naturopathic perspective. Nat Med J. 1998;1:6-17). Annual production rates for synthetic, carcinogenic and other industrial chemicals was 1 billion pounds in 1940 - during 1980's it exceeded 500 billion pounds. (An extract from Cancer Prevention News). Evidently, faced with a bombardment of nasty substances, therapies which remove them from the body are necessary and highly prized. If Dr Theodore Baroody is right - 'all illnesses come from the same root cause...to much tissue acid waste', then this is indeed propitious! More Articles Coming Soon |
